A laboratory model system for analysing microbial interactions occurring in anoxic estuarine sediments. ArchiMer
Herbert, R; Keith, S.
Defined mixed populations of Clostridium butyricum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and Chromatium vinosum co-existed for long periods when grown in a single stage chemostat with glucose as sole carbon source. The nature and availability of the inorganic nitrogen source exerted a major effect on carbon flow in the experimental system. The data show that both the C. butyricum and D. desulfuricans isolates can utilise NO sub(3) as an e super(-)acceptor with an increase in cell yield. Under these growth conditions the free S super(2-) levels were lower resulting in more stable mixed populations. In addition the data show that the C. butyricum produces more oxidised fermentation end-products (acetate) when NO sub(3) super(-) was available and more reduced products...

Avoine, J.
Economic activities and urbanization along the Seine watershed, are the main factors of increased river discharge with natural deposits. A long term supervision of this river has allowed the assessment of the liquid flow rate, the solid load, and the metallic pollution.

Rambaud, B; Hauville, S.
After using physical and mathematical models to equip Seine Estuary, it was necessary to develop new investigation methods. This paper describes the methodology and the means used as the first results obtained.

Desprez, M; Dupont, J.
Many harbour installations have reduced the intertidal zone and involved estuary choking by marine sediments. In 1980, weirs were built in dikes of navigation channels. This study strikes the balance of their impact on estuarine biofacies and points out indicator species for the study of biological impact of environmental design.

Avoine, J; Crevel, L.
Hydrological study of Seine Bay displays two areas differentiated by salinity distribution. One has marine characteristics and the other is under fluvial influence. In this paper the authors give the main results of exchanges between the environments, obtained by the study of water dilution, solid particles dispersion, and their contribution to sedimentation.

Modern morpho-sedimentological patterns in a tide-dominated estuary system: the Bay of Brest (west Britanny, France) ArchiMer
Gregoire, Gwendoline; Ehrhold, Axel; Le Roy, Pascal; Jouet, Gwenael; Garlan, Thierry.
Long-studied with respect to its sedimentological features (1897), the Bay of Brest (Western Britanny, France) is a textbook example of a tide-dominated estuary. Characterised by macrotidal conditions, this estuary system is sheltered from the open sea (Iroise Sea) by a narrow strait that partitions the wave tide influences and continental/marine inputs. Sediments are supplied to the bay both by rivers (the Aulne and Elorn rivers) and by marine tidal currents. This study presents new analyses of detailed facies and morphological patterns, based on the integration of multisource data compiling seabed sampling, swath and LIDAR bathymetry, and backscatter imagery. The Main Map, at a scale of 1:90,000, contains (1) a sedimentological distribution using the...

Morfología y sedimentación del sistema estuarino Estero Salado - Río Guayas OceanDocs
Rada, F..
